Sen. Schumer Says ‘Victory for American People’ After Bill Passes to Avoid Shutdown
Good news for the America people came Thursday night when the US Senate passed a bill to avert a government shutdown. The House had already passed the spending proposal. This comes after weeks of negotiations between House and Senate members.
Democratic senator Chuck Schumer of New York lauded the bill, stating that it was “the best deal the American people deserve.” Schumer credited the negotiations and hard work of all members on both sides of the aisle for bringing the bill to fruition.
The bill is expected to be signed into law by President Donald Trump, who tweeted a message of congratulations to the Senate following their bill’s passage.
The bill itself will provide $1.37 trillion in total government funding over the next year, with most of that going to military and other national security needs. It will also provide $5 million in emergency relief funding for the victims of the California wildfires and $900 million for Puerto Rico’s nutrition assistance program.
Additionally, the bill reauthorizes funding for a number of programs, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, continuing disability insurance, and child nutrition.
Schumer concluded with a heartfelt message for the American people; he stated that “what matters most isn’t what we passed tonight, it’s what it means: goodnight for the American people.”
It’s clear that this spending proposal and sentiment are both great news for the people of the United States. The bill not only provides necessary funding but also shows that both sides of Congress can come together to pass important legislation. We can only hope that this feeling of unity and bipartisanship remains in the months and years to come.
